Expires:No;;873893 FXUS65 KVEF 061753 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1053 AM PDT Sun Apr 6 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather will continue through through the week. A ridge will build into the region and result in warmer temperatures and lighter winds today. Other than some light west to southwest breezes on Monday, winds will remain light through the first part of next week. Temperatures will warm through the week and remain above normal for the duration of the forecast. && .UPDATE...Temperatures will return to normal today as ridging continues to build over the region. A shortwave will move through the Pacific Northwest tomorrow resulting in breezy westerly winds across the western Mojave Desert and breezy southerly winds across the southern Great Basin. Our warming trend will continue through the end of the week as the upper-level ridge remains in place over the Western US. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Upper level ridging will build over the region today which will bring dry conditions, light winds, and warmer temperatures. Compared to yesterday, it will be noticeably warm as high temperatures will run 5-10 higher than yesterday and there will be chilly north breezes today. On Monday, the ridge that tries to establishes itself over the region will be knocked down by a system moving through the Pacific Northwest. This shortwave will be well north of the area and will not directly impact the local area other than some increased cloudiness in the southern Great Basin. West to southwest winds will increase Monday afternoon in response to an increasing pressure gradient as the area of high pressure gets squished. The strongest pressure gradient will remain over northern Nevada, thus not expecting widespread wind impacts. Enhancement of west winds around the Western Mojave Desert is possible which could bump wind and impacts in that area, however wind impacts should remain minor in most locations as high probability for wind gusts over 40 MPH remains isolated. In addition, the westerly jet doesn't push into that area until late in the afternoon, so the potential for higher gusts will be short lived before efficient mixing ends with the setting sun. In general, expect winds gust to 20-30 MPH across the region with some higher gusts to 35 MPH in the Sierra, Spring Mountains, and the Western Mojave Desert...mainly late Monday afternoon. The warm up continues on Monday as temperatures climb another 5-10 degrees warmer than today's temperatures. Above normal temperatures are expected areawide Monday afternoon. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday Heights continue to rise on Tuesday as the upper level disturbance moves east and the ridge rebounds. Temperatures venture further into above normal territory, peaking Thursday into Friday with highs 10 to 15 degrees above average for mid-April. This pattern should yield widespread Minor (Level 1) HeatRisk with pockets of Moderate (Level 2) HeatRisk along the Colorado River, Death Valley, and other areas of lower elevation in the Mojave Desert. This level of heat primarily affects those that are sensitive to heat, have not had time to acclimate to increased temperatures, or do not have access to sufficient cooling or hydration. Plan ahead for heat, especially if planning on spending time outdoors. Forecast confidence decreases towards next weekend. Guidance shows a low pressure system moving into the west coast at the end of this week, bringing a decrease in temperatures and increase in wind. However, there is disagreement between ensembles in the trajectory of the low, which will have an effect on the magnitude of these changes. Details should become more apparent throughout the week - stay tuned. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Light winds following mainly diurnal patterns are expected for a majority of the forecast period.
