Damage surveys continued along the storm track from Carmel in Hamilton county, to Lapel in Madison county, and on to near Eaton in northern Delaware county. Four separate tornadoes were identified across these counties. Widespread damage from straight line winds associated with a bowing segment as well as the rear flank downdraft south of the tornado tracks was also found. The NWS Indianapolis office is awaiting additional damage reports and drone footage which might lead to an increase in the length of current tracks, as well as lead to the identification of an additional tornado or two where it was difficult to see or access areas from the ground survey. This information may not be available until early next week. An update will be issued as soon as this data is evaluated. ..Carmel Tornado... Trees to the south of an office building were uprooted and convergent toward the building. Damage to the office building was confined to the southwest corner and the entry way on the east side of the structure. Metal framing around windows on the southwest corner were pulled outward as was the large entry way frame and windows. This tornado continued northeast with numerous homes and apartment buildings sustaining roof and siding damage. Many trees were also uprooted or snapped along the path with definite convergent signs noted in areas where trees came down in groups. Damage was not consistent along track, with breaks of a quarter mile to a third of mile at times with with very little if any damage. Most damage associated with the tornado ended near the White River and 146th street. ..Southern Lapel Tornado... Substantial damage occurred at a large farm with a home and several outbuildings sustaining substantial damage. Debris was strewn from west to northeast and deposited down wind for over a mile. ..Northern Lapel Tornado... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 110 mph Path Length /statute/: 11.57 miles Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 04/02/2025 Start Time: 09:46 PM EDT Start Location: 1 NW Lapel / Madison County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 40.0808 / -85.8606 End Date: 04/02/2025 End Time: 09:55 PM EDT End Location: 3 N Country Club Heights / Madison County / IN End Lat/Lon: 40.1697 / -85.679 Survey Summary: Tornado likely began in a field just west southwest of a farm north of lapel, then moved northeast. Several barns and a grain silo sustained damage at the farm, with an L shaped poll barn being destroyed. Wind from the tornado blew in a south facing garage door, then lifted the roof and walls collapsed. This tornado then proceeded northeast for about 11 miles with sporadic damage along the path. Strong straight line winds south of the tornado track created damage near highway 32. The latter portion of this tornado track is one area being evaluated for a possible secondary tornado. ..Eastern Madison into Delaware County Tornado... Rating: EF2 Estimated Peak Wind: 125 mph Path Length /statute/: 15.15 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 04/02/2025 Start Time: 09:57 PM EDT Start Location: 5 NNW Daleville / Madison County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 40.1882 / -85.5945 End Date: 04/02/2025 End Time: 10:17 PM EDT End Location: 2 SSW Eaton / Delaware County / IN End Lat/Lon: 40.3194 / -85.3755 Survey Summary: Tornado began in wooded area south southwest of a farm in eastern Madison county. The tornado was about with 200 yards wide when it hit the first homestead. The tornado ripped the fireplace off the west facing wall of home, with winds then entering the second level and blowing north side portion of roof to the north while wind blew eastern facing wall outward. Significant mud splatter was along the entire northern part of home. Three outbuildings were completely destroyed, but only anchoring was mortar holding concrete blocks to foundation. Buildings were very old and mortar likely was weak with age. An old and large barn on the property was also shifted off foundation with northern half of roof thrown well to the north northeast. This tornado continued northeast with damage to numerous structures all the way up to just west of Eaton. Like the previous tornadoes, damage was not constant but sporadic over the entire track.
